There are two main reasons why your dog will be eating grass.

The first reason is to help it to induce vomiting.
It will be doing this to get rid of something that it has eaten that is unpleasant or dangerous.

Dogs do not have the ability to digest grass due to a lack of the necessary enzymes that are required for grass digestion.

By eating grass the dog knows that it will bind with the offending food and when it vomits the food will be dispelled from it’s system.

This is a natural instinct that the dog has, to protect itself from poisoning or foods that can make it feel ill.

Dogs instinctively know what type of grass to eat for this process of elimination.
As they cannot digest the grass there is no alternative other than to bring the grass up which will clear out it’s stomach of any unpleasant matter that is making it feel ill.

One of the benefits of owning a dog is the fact that in many cases, knowing that they need exercise is a good reason for us to get out and exercise as well. So you could say that owning a dog actually keeps humans healthier. Certainly a well-trained dog keeps us a lot happier.

There are many benefits that can be gained from owning a dog but you only get as much out of them as you put into them.

Good training, good shelter, good food, fresh water, regular exercise and a happy home are all that a dog needs to be content.

Just as the wrong foods can be very detrimental to the health of humans, the same goes for the health of dogs. We have already discussed some of the nutritional requirements in an earlier post and in another post we will be looking at some items that can be quite dangerous to dogs such as chocolate.

The dog should then be called back and praised for coming. The dog should never be called and punishment administered when it returns as this only makes the dog more reluctant to come next time.  

If the dog is quiet it should be praised. It is important to show the dog what it is allowed to do and what it is not. The dog will soon learn to associate being quiet with praise.  
The owner’s tone of voice should be soft but firm when correcting the dog.

If the dog does not respond then a ’shake tin’ (tin can half filled with stones) may be used to gain the dogs attention. This should be shaken vigorously in conjunction with a firm “NO” and the dog should be praised when it stops barking.

The ’shake can’ or any other object must not be thrown at the dog. 

If the dog does not listen when corrected verbally, then it requires obedience training. 
Physical punishment such as belting the dog, throwing a bucket of water over it or squirting it with a water pistol can usually makes the problem worse. It will also demonstrate that the owner has lost control. 

Obedience training does not in itself correct a barking problem, but it enables the owner to gain control over their dog so that it can be commanded to stop barking.
Five minutes, twice a day reinforcing commands such as “HEEL”, “SIT”, “STAY”, “DOWN”, and “COME” will help maintain control. 

Group training sessions have a number of advantages in that they provide an opportunity for the dog to socialise with other dogs and people, and for owners to train the dog around distractions. 

Once the dog has been obedience trained the owner has a set of commands that the dog has learned, which can be used in difficult situations.
For example you may tell your dog to sit and stay while a visitor arrives at the front door. 
People must be consistent when training. Often an owner will yell at or scold the dog for barking and then on other occasions reward it by bringing it inside.

When a dog is healthy, his temperature is about 102 degrees F, his heart beats 80 to 120 times per minute, and he takes 15 to 20 breaths every minute. His mucous membranes, such as his gums and tongue, are pink and have a fast rate of capillary refill. He has bright, vivid eyes, clean skin and lots of hair.

Become familiar with the normal bowel movements of your dog, so you will be able to detect any abnormalities in the appearance or frequency of his digestive activity. Also, observe your dog for any signs that he is having trouble urinating.

Check your dog’s coat frequently for any bumps, scratches, bites, parasites or hair loss. You should also make a note of any strange behaviors, such as lethargy, balance problems or excessive nervousness.

Observing the early signs of sickness goes a long way toward helping your veterinarian effective treat your dog. Keep a record of symptoms, when they first developed and if they have been intermittent or ongoing.
